Le chou rouge, ça a plein d'avantages : c'est bon, c'est joli, et c'est rigolo. Pour vous convaincre de tout ça, j'ai des arguments-ingrédients de masse :

• un petit chou rouge ;
• deux pommes un peu acides ;
• des morceaux de porc ;
• des lardons.

Red cabbage has lots of advantages: it's tasty, it's pretty, and it's fun. To convince you of all this, I have some massive arguments-ingredients:

• a small red cabbage,
• two apples, a bit sour,
• some pork,
• bacon in dice.

Considérons le chou rouge et un couteau :

Consider the red cabbage and a knife:

L'ouverture du chou affiche d'emblée le premier avantage du chou rouge : c'est joli. Je m'extasie chaque fois que j'ouvre un chou rouge, c'est comme ça.

Opening the cabbage immediately shows the first advantage of it: it's pretty. I go into great raptures each time I cut a red cabbage in two.

On découpe la bestiole en lamelles fines :

et on l'envoie à l'eau bouillante pour un premier bain de dix minutes. Voici donc le second avantage du chou rouge : c'est rigolo. La preuve : de jolis reflets... bleus.

and put it into boiling water for a first 10-minute boil. Here comes the second advantage of red cabbage: it's funny. Proof: very nice... blue... tints.

On profite de la première cuisson pour découper les pommes :

Those ten minutes can be used to dice the apples:

Et, quand on sort le chou, il est décidément bleu. Un comble pour du chou rouge.

And when the cabbage is strained, it's definitely blue. Nice irony for red cabbage.

On nettoie la casserole, on fait dorer les lardons dans un peu de matière grasse :

On couvre d'eau tout ça, sel, poivre, et on laisse mijoter. L'acidité des pommes rend un couleur moins bleue au chou (quand je dis que c'est amusant.)

Cover all this with water, salt, pepper, and let it simmer. The acidity of the apples gives a shade to the cabbage that is less blue (when I say it's funny)

Et au service, une bonne heure plus tard, le troisième avantage du chou rouge ne fait aucun doute : c'est bon. Et c'est plus bleu.

And, after service, more than an hour later, the third advantage of red cabbage makes no doubt: it's tasty. And it isn't blue anymore.

Juste pour rigoler, j'ai frotté un peu de peau de pomme dans mon jus initial (bleu) de chou rouge :

To have a laugh, I rubbed a piece of apple skin in my initial (blue) juice of (red) cabbage:

Je trouve ça décidément très amusant.
